Personal Description:

I am a graduate of the universities of Glasgow and St Andrews, achieving First Class Honours for my undergraduate work and Distinction in the Dissertation for my postgraduate research. Although specialising in Philosophy, my studies encompassed Politics, English, and Theology - I am able to provide incisive tutoring for any of these areas.

Vocationally, I have sustained experience in the cultural sector. As a Tour Officer for the Mackintosh House, I helped design and implement the venue's widely successful tour programme (for which, the Scottish Tourist Board awarded the institution a Four Star ranking). More recently, I have served as the Events and Media Deputy for the Scottish Writers' Centre (coordinating a range of literary events, featuring eminent guest speakers including Jackie Kay and Caro Ramsay). I am, presently, a Researcher and Workshop Coordinator for Fablevision Studios - conducting community research into WWI Govan, and liaising closely with local schools to share our findings with pupils (through the facilitation of classroom presentations and discussions).

I am also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist - with a trio of musicians, I have toured the country, received favourable reviews from national publications, and narrowly missed out (as a Wickerman runner-up) on supporting Texas and the Scissor Sisters! Additionally, I am a passionate writer - my poetry has found publication, featuring in the Scottish periodical 'Undercurrents'.

Tutoring Experience:

I instructed numerous school groups as a Tour Officer for the Mackintosh House, and informed school classes of Fablevision's research outcomes. At university, I provided extracurricular mentoring to undergraduates struggling with their coursework and/or exam preparation (in both the departments of Philosophy and Theology). I am intimately familiar with secondary school curricula, and can provide robust English tutoring for National 3-5, Higher, and Advanced Higher levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe, firmly, that openness is crucial to successful tutor-student interactions - being receptive to students' individual needs allows me to tailor my style accordingly, and offer the most effective service. Generally, I am a strong communicator - I provide substantial feedback, both verbal and written, on the student's work. I am able to break down subject matter, and portray topics in more relatable lights. My method tends towards the Socratic - I afford students the opportunity to question and seek the depths of the subject at hand, encouraging their autonomy of learning. But, I nevertheless recognise the means-end component of standardised education; I am ultimately committed to enabling students' peak performance in examinations.
