I graduated from The University of Hull with a BA (hons) 2:1 in History in 2009. I then went on to study a Masters in Medieval history and graduated in 2010. I am currently in my final year of a PhD and I have tutored English, Maths, Primary and History alongside my studies for over four years. This also includes teaching maths at behavioural specialist school.
I am very passionate about learning and I encourage a pro-active approach towards studying amongst my tutees. I thoroughly enjoy teaching on a one to one basis and I have found that it is very successful in building the pupil's confidence, exam technique and subject knowledge.
I am friendly, approachable and always build a rapport with my pupils; allowing us to build upon their skills and knowledge to ensure they achieve the best of their abilities.

This academic year, I have been tutoring Maths and English at a local grammar school full time. As well as teaching at The University of Hull.
Here are some examples of the results my pupils have achieved:
1.) English GCSE Language and Literature- Dec- working at a U (fail), June- Passed GCSE with B in English language and Literature
2.) Maths GCSE Jan working at grade D, June- achieved a grade B.
3.) English GCSE (A-Level student who had failed GCSE English and was resitting) Jan-June Achieved a grade B.
4.) English GCSE Began tuition in year 10 and was in 4th set at school- Achieved an A (lang/Lit) in GCSE exams.
5.) Maths GCSE Jan grade E, June- achieved grade C.
6.) Primary- Year 5 working at a 3B, achieved 5C in year 6 SATs
7.) Primary- Year 4 (private school)- Falling behind in English but excelling in all other subjects. After 3 months of one to one tuition, English became her favourite subject and the school report illustrated that the gap between the other subjects and English had been closed.
8.) History Undergraduate- July 2013- working at fail (below 40%) to 44% at best. This year (2014) all grades were above 60% and he is now working towards a final mark of a 2:1 and is on track to get a place on a PGCE.
9.) History A-Level- Sep- working at a grade D, June- achieved a B.
10.) Year 9 Maths-Sep- In the lowest set, hated the subject, July- received an award from the school maths department for the 'most improved pupil in maths and scored a grade C (at GCSE level) in the year 9 exam.
I tailor-fit tutorials to the needs of each individual tutee. On meeting a new tutee, I ask them to prepare some writing or answer a question and then assess their strengths and weaknesses. I then base my lesson plans on improving their skills/knowledge in areas that they are falling behind in. I spend a lot of time on lesson planning and thoroughly enjoy finding or making new teaching resources in order to ensure pupils are engaged.
I adopt a fun approach towards my primary school pupils- instilling a love for learning and developing their confidence whilst ensuring the tutorials are well directed and based upon the National curriculum. I have a lot of worksheets, texts and lesson plans prepared for primary school pupils.
GCSE: I shape my lesson plans around the tutees deadlines and the National curriculum: for example if they are preparing to do coursework, I will base my tutorials on teaching the skills required to carry out research. If the tutee needs to work on exam techniques, I base my lessons on this and use past papers to work through with the tutee, developing confidence and knowledge and using writing methods such as PEE.
Again, I base my lesson plans on the National curriculum and ask the tutees which exam board they are using. With A-Level students, I place a lot of emphasis on essay writing skills- encouraging and teaching students to write concise, evidenced arguments. I also offer my A-Level students advice on university applications- especially personal statements. As a tutor at University, I believe my knowledge of the modules and requirements of university study helps.
Undergraduate/ University level history-
I focus on academic writing skills with tutees in this area and encourage students to develop their own arguments using primary sources and secondary literature and adopt an empirical approach to historical study.
Again I shape my tutorials around the National curriculum, emphasising writing skills for example PEE, creative, descriptive and persuasive writing and the interpretation of texts. I have taught many GCSE set texts / the anthology.
With all my tutees, I provide them with 'homework' tasks, that I mark and give them feedback for. I also encourage them to read extensively to develop their vocabulary and writing skills. I also ensure that I teach key skills in essay writing to all of my tutees, equipping them with the skills required for further education.
I have an extensive collection of history books, literature, poetry, plays, revision guides, past papers and worksheets to aid in tutorials and always encourage my tutees to adopt a pro-active approach to their own learning.
I am patient, honest and friendly and would never advise a tutee that they required more tutorials when they did not! I also like to provide parents regular feedback.
I am happy to teach tutorials for 60 mins, 90 mins, and 2 hours, individuals and groups (group prices vary) and I provide my tutees with my email address so that they contact me anytime- with any queries/worries they may have about their studies.
