Personal Description:

***I am a tutor currently working with some of London's top tutoring agencies, now available for new students***

I attended Ampleforth College as both Academic and Music Scholar at the age of 13 and quickly threw myself into every activity and subject. While maintaining high academic standards I appeared for the school's 1st XV in rugby; performed and toured with the Abbey choir, Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, and Big Band; and was heavily involved in the school theatre. During this time, I developed a love for Classics (Ancient Greek and Latin) and Music. I graduated from Ampleforth College with:
7 A*'s at GCSE
3 A's at A-level
Diploma in Music Performance
3 Grade 8's (2 with distinction).

After leaving Ampleforth I tutored music privately to self-fund a 2-year ethnomusicological project in the Solomon Islands, collecting and recording traditional folk songs of the Islanders which had not yet been written down and are at risk of being lost as the country modernises.

After this 2 year period I felt a growing hunger and desire to study and moved to Edinburgh to undertake an MA in Classics, always my favourite subject. It was a difficult time in my personal life, at times completing the course felt beyond me, but I carried on and successfully achieved a First Class degree as well as the highest dissertation mark ever awarded in the Classics department (90%).

I am taking time out of full-time study to develop a thesis for further post-graduate study specialising in the reception of Greek poets in Latin literature. Other projects include preparing my dissertation for publication at the advice of my university tutor and finishing my Mathematics A level (I gave it up after AS and regretted it ever since!). When I am not reading I am normally playing an instrument (I am currently teaching myself the trumpet) or composing music.

Tutoring Experience:

I am currently signed up as a tutor to some of the top tutoring agencies in London. I have 2 years teaching experience tutoring to students mainly between the ages of 6-17 both in the UK and in Sydney, not only in academic subjects but Brass instruments, Guitar and Piano. I have also given demonstrations and workshops on the Tuba. In my final year of university, I organised and led revision groups for my fellow Classics students as well as mentoring one student in the final stages of her dissertation. She achieved a 1st in the dissertation (a grade above her predicted mark).

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is diagnostic. The first session will be spent with tutees and parents to work out a goal and identify areas of a subject that require improving. From this first session I will develop a clear and focused lesson plan to reach our goals.

My tutoring is ultimately shaped by the learning style of my tutees which is established in the first lessons. I myself am an audio and visionary learner and my preferred method of teaching is along these lines through dialogue, physical actions and role-play to both illustrate points and embed them in memory.
All human beings are inquisitive by nature and particularly children and young adults. I see it as my role to nurture, develop - and sometimes help children rediscover - this instinct through play; by making learning a fun experience which is cooperative and shared rather than singular and sometimes lonely.
