Personal Description:

I recently completed a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course in Mathematics at the University of Birmingham, in preparation for my PGDipEd, which starts in September. I am moving into teaching after a successful career in the private sector. I have always had a passion for learning, which has inspired me to take up teaching. Maths is a subject that too many of us struggle with or are scared of (me included at times), yet is so useful throughout our lives. I have first hand experience of this, which helps bring the subject to life and ultimately aids understanding and improves results.

I have an 'A' Level in Maths (Pure and Statistics), a first class degree in Psychology (BSc) and a MBA from Imperial College, London. I am also a Chartered Accountant.

I have an enhanced DBS check in place (previously known as CRB).

Tutoring Experience:

I am fairly new to teaching and tutoring maths, but have vast experience as a trainer and mentor within the workplace in previous roles. I am also currently gaining experience within secondary schools in Birmingham.

Although my SKE enables me to teach 'A' Level Maths (including Further Maths), I am currently focusing upon Maths to GCSE level.

I have recently been awarded a Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarship by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in recognition of my potential to become an inspirational maths teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that optimal learning happens in a relaxed yet challenging environment. I achieve this by fully understanding my tutees' needs and designing our work around these. I begin by understanding the syllabus being taken and any specific concerns. Teaching is an interactive process and I believe in working with my tutees to come up with an appropriate programme of work, which can be adapted when or if required.

I believe that it is important to establish a broad understanding of a topic initially, using real life examples and different scenarios to reinforce this. When appropriate, we then look at how to transfer this understanding to examination style questions. As part of this process, I will provide tools and techniques to develop a successful exam strategy.

Tutoring available weekday evenings and weekends and weekdays during school holidays.

Any cancellations under 24 hours before scheduled sessions will incur a full session charge.
