Personal Description:

I specialise in supporting children and adults with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties on a one-to-one basis.

I believe learning should be relevant and tailored to an individual’s needs and interests. I am very good at putting people at ease as one-to-one tuition can sometimes feel intense or overwhelming. I am an enthusiastic tutor and I’m very supportive, patient, relaxed and believe maintaining a sense of humour is important.

I am an Approved Tutor with Dyslexia Scotland.

I normally tutor from my own home. I will consider travelling, if necessary, but will charge an additional fee to cover my travel time and expenses.

Tutoring Experience:

My background has been primarily in teaching adults with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties such as dyscalculia, autism and dysgraphia.

I possess specialist qualifications in teaching and supporting people with dyslexia and have 15 years’ experience in working with children and adults with dyslexia.

More recently, I spent two years working in primary schools in Fife teaching Information and Communication Technology to pupils and delivering staff training and development.

I believe that early intervention is of extreme importance in helping children, who are having difficulties, to improve their reading, writing and numeracy. It helps to build their confidence and to find ways of learning which traditional teaching may not always encompass.

I use a multi-sensory approach to teaching and learning. Multisensory instruction is a way of teaching that engages more than one sense at a time. For children with reading issues like dyslexia, the use of sight, hearing, movement and touch can be helpful for learning.

I also encourage the use of technology as it is particularly beneficial in engaging children with additional support needs.

I can offer screening for dyslexia and scotopic sensitivity syndrome or visual stress.

I have developed and delivered specialised courses aimed at reaching 'hard to reach' teenage learners resulting in many achieving SQA qualifications and progressing into further education or employment.

I’ve had learners who have won local and national awards in recognition of their achievements.

I am an Assessor and Internal Verifier for Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Core Skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer specialised one-to-one tuition and support in an interactive learning environment. My approach to teaching is learner-centred and takes into account a person’s individual learning style.

I encourage people to become critical learners, to question, to gain a deeper understanding. Above all, I want learners to become confident, to enjoy what they are doing and to feel a real sense of achievement.
