I thoroughly enjoy teaching and learning languages and I particularly love the languages and cultures of Spain and Latin America. I have lived and worked in Spain, Portugal, Germany and the USA, as well as in the UK. I currently work part-time as a teacher in an independent school and I am married with two teenage children and a dog.
I have a Ph.D in Spanish and Portuguese Literature and am a qualified translator but, whilst I have really enjoyed doing research and translation, I find teaching far more fun.
I taught Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literature at universities in the USA and the UK for 20 years before retraining to teach in secondary schools. I currently teach Spanish to GCSE and A level at Downside School in Somerset. I am experienced at preparing students for GCSE and A-level exams and am an experienced teacher-examiner for IGCSE, AS and A-level oral exams. My background in Spanish Literature also enables me to teach any of the set texts for the new Spanish A level.
In addition to preparing school and university students for exams, I also have considerable experience of teaching both Spanish and Portuguese to adults wishing to learn these languages for a range of different reasons.
Language learning is fun and should always be seen as a window into a new world. It is important to me that my students enjoy the learning experience, and I also believe in exposing students at all levels to genuine target-language material.
Every student has different aims and a different approach to learning, so I will always use the introductory lesson to assess these and to plan an appropriate strategy to ensure that progress is made in as enjoyable a way as possible.
