I have been studying Ancient Greek for 14 years and I love being able to read ancient texts in the original language!
I completed my BA with the Open University while working full-time in the health service. I resigned from my job in order to complete my Masters at Queen's University in Belfast. Following this, I lived in Greece for a short time, then returned home to Belfast to have a baby. I began my PhD (on a part-time basis) when my daughter was 6 months old. My thesis will take the form of a commentary of the ancient Greek novel by Chariton.
I have an ongoing appointment as a tutor in Ancient Greek at the annual Summer Workshop in Greek and Latin at the University of Wales. The 14-day workshop takes place annually in August. I teach Intermediate Greek, and at the completion of this level, students will have mastered most of the grammar necessary to read unadapted texts in the original.
I am an Open Learning Tutor at Queen’s University of Belfast and, during the 2012/13 academic year, I will be teaching my own courses on the ancient novel.
In July 2006, I was awarded a Potential Teacher scholarship to the Joint Association of Classical Teachers (JACT) Summer School in Greek at Bryanston. During my week at the summer school, I shadowed tutors at Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
I believe that learning happens best in an informal, encouraging and supportive environment. I am enthusiastic about my subject and aim to make learning fun and enjoyable. Together, we will identify areas of particular need and lessons will be tailored accordingly.
