Personal Description:

Hello! I'm Helen, a teacher and children's writer. Having tutored and taught in primary schools for several years, I went on to complete an MA in Writing for Children at Bath Spa in 2017 and now write part-time for an educational publisher alongside tutoring.

I'm passionate about children reading for pleasure and writing stories that ignite their imagination, while using grammar, punctuation and spelling thoughtfully to support and extend their reading and writing skills. I absolutely love primary maths teaching and believe in using a range of creative and practical methods to secure maths knowledge. I offer secondary maths tuition because if your KS3/4 child is struggling with maths, I'm the right tutor to target and secure the foundations they need to succeed at secondary; however if you are looking for someone to stretch your talented secondary mathematician another tutor might be a better choice.

I believe that tutoring is about enhancing and extended classroom learning. It's an opportunity to give children tailored, individual attention and a confidence boost that enables them to thrive.

Tutoring Experience:

I qualified as a teacher in 2014, achieving an 'Outstanding' in my PGCE. Following this I was a primary class teacher for two years in Key Stage 2. I worked at a tutoring centre which catered for children from 4-16 of varying abilities and needs, before moving to Twinkl Educational Resources where I write curriculum-themed stories for their Originals books package. I specialise in English and maths particularly at primary.

I have tutored secondary and university English since graduating from Oxford in June 2010, and helped my GCSE students achieve top results.

Since 2008 I have taught Creative Writing at Kilve Court, and now run courses exploring a range of subjects including poetic techniques, story structure and style, and understanding Shakespeare's plays.

Tutoring Approach:

Each student is unique. I work with you and the pupil to target weaker areas, and build on strengths and interests. Each session is a mixture of building on a reinforcing prior learning while introducing new skills and techniques. Your child is already working hard, so I make sure tutorials are fun, by finding games and activities that both stretch and engage.

I don’t believe in panic. Students should set themselves that are high but achievable (and when they achieve them, they can keep aiming higher). I show students how to think for themselves, and to believe in themselves as thinkers.
