This is how 2 referees rated Harry:
I am a recent physics graduate of Lancaster University with a fresh knowledge of maths and physics. Having studied physics at university I have had to do a lot of self-motivated learning which I believe has given me the skills to help other interested students to reach their potential.
I attended local schools in the area and having finished my A levels only 5 years ago I will be somewhat familiar with what the students have to deal with.
I have tutored three students, one A level Maths, one GCSE Maths and Physics and one GCSE maths. I have been a tour guide for the physics department which entailed guiding prospective students around the department and providing a welcoming and friendly conversation about the various parts of the department and some of the physics that went on there.
I will discuss with the students and their parents what weaknesses they feel they have as well as working on what they are covering in their lessons to reinforce their learning. As for the specific sessions, from my experience at University, I believe practice is the most effective way of becoming comfortable enough with the mathematical skills which are at the heart of both maths and physics. This means that the standard session would involve looking over any problems they had with recent work they were given and then working through practice questions together, explaining any difficult concepts.
I will see on a case by case basis whether or not I feel homework is necessary as I know that they will often be set a large amount at school itself. However if I see that doing a small amount of refresher practice would benefit the student I would set a few practice questions. I feel I am there to support the learning they do in school not be the teacher.
