Media / Communication Studies
I have an English degree from Loughborough University and I’m about to finish an MA in Early Modern History from the University of York. I primarily work as both a writer and a private tutor.
I've written for national newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, The Independent, The Huffington Post, History Today, All About History, Explore History, History of Royals, Discover Your Ancestors, Writers' Forum, Media Magazine and the magazine of the association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE). I've also done work for ITV, helping with their election night coverage in 2017.
In my spare time I like to read, watch Netflix (I'm currently enjoying The Bodyguard and am eagerly awaiting the third series of The Man in the High Castle) and socialise. I travel quite a lot and have recently returned from trips to Italy, America and the Caribbean.
I have been tutoring since 2015 and it has been wonderful to see so many students achieve great results. In 2017/18 year a student studying for exams on British history, culture and translation recived offers from all five of her university choices to study for a Masters degree in translation. Another student passed his functional skills Level 2 with me and at GCSE level a student whose target grade was Level 3/4 achieved a Level 8 in Literature and a 6 in language with weekly lessons from me. In a previous year another student with dyslexia who studied GCSE English with me, having already re-taken the exam twice, secured a C grade with me this time around. I was very thrilled for her that she was able to go on to study the course of her choice.
I have experience in tutoring the IB, IGCSEs, GCSEs and Functional Skills.
Here is some feedback:
'Harry is an excellent tutor and I would thoroughly recommend him. He seems to genuinely care about his students results and is very knowledgeable and helpful.'
'Harry really helped our two boys with their English Language GCSE, one of them dyslexic. They progressed in leaps and bounds and the school asked what it was we were doing! Harry is also a very understanding and amenable person, which makes it a pleasure to work with him.'
'Harry is very knowledgeable on English language and GCSE exam techniques, and is patient and able to encourage a good effort from our two teenage boys.'
As writing and journalism is one of my mains passions, as well as my profession, I pride myself on teaching students how to write well and structure their arguments in a coherent way which I think is key to passing the exams. Having taken my A-levels in 2012 and GCSEs in 2010, I am very familiar with the modern exam system.
I am persistent but quite laid back and believe in encouraging students to put in their best efforts! I am always available by phone or e-mail.
Please note I will be happy to meet in person for an intial first session and whenever I can but would prefer to tutor over the Internet. This has so far worked very well for my students.
