Personal Description:

Ever since I was very young, I have been curious about the world, and I have regarded education as one of the most important facets of life. As you can see from my results, this dedication has helped me to achieve consistently excellent results in my own academic studies.

However, more than just believing that education is important, I also feel that knowledge is important. I am widely read, and have actively sought out unusual and useful skills, either in my studies or my personal life. For instance, while at university, I applied - and was selected - for a study-abroad programme. This gave me the chance to immerse myself in Canadian culture and to experience a new academic culture. While in Canada, I indulged my own interest in philosophy, and took a critical thinking course. When I returned to England for my final year course, I chose to study the art of rhetoric as one of my modules.

I believe that my eclectic interests would be beneficial to any potential tutee, as I would be able to give them an appreciation of the big picture, as well as the important details.

The most transferable skills I have are in subjects where essay-writing is important. For instance, critical thinking is useful in understanding and constructing arguments, and the basic principles of rhetoric are the basis of most "essay writing tips". Therefore, although I have only listed some subjects, I would be willing to tutor others if requested. Please, feel free to ask if you have any questions.

I include a full list of my academic qualifications, with grades and subjects.

Tutoring Experience:

Over the last five years, I have gained a great deal of experience in tutoring. Some of the first examples of tutoring came when I was taking my GCSEs. I was one of the best students in the year, and several of my friends asked for some help in understanding the course materials.

My role as an unofficial tutor continued during my A level courses, when I offered essay-writing techniques to students in my year. This was very helpful for some of them when it came to writing coursework or exam papers. Towards the end of my own A levels and during my gap year, I also helped my sister with her GCSEs, in some cases improving her final result by a full grade above what her teachers had predicted.

However, the closest I have come to professional tutoring was during the second year of my university course, which I spent in Canada. Whilst there, I again found myself helping others with their studies. During the first semester, I was an informal T.A. during some of the course, helping to guide the discussions and study of a small seminar group. Then, during my second semester, I became involved in a volunteer programme during my free time. On several occasions, I was part of a group that helped children with mild learning difficulties. Although it was challenging, I also found it very rewarding, and I would now like the opportunity to gain experience as a professional tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

With all of my students, my aim is to build their self-confidence as well as their knowledge base. That way, I hope to give them all of the skills and experience they will need to deal with challenges in their future.

In my experience, there is no single correct approach to tutoring. Every student is different, and has different needs. Some students will be looking to pass an exam or retest with the highest grades possible; others might be looking to broaden their knowledge of a subject without thinking of exams.

Therefore, my approach with any potential tutee would be to first find out their goals and aspirations, and discuss their preferred learning methods. I then use that to develop a programme suited to them, focusing on each student's personal long-term goals, nurturing their strengths, and find ways to overcome any weaknesses they might have.
