I am an experienced tutor providing tuition for GCE (A level) Chemistry in and around Reading. I am proud of my proven track record of success and my students consistently achieve excellent results.
I am a former Head of Chemistry for a Pesticide and Residue Analytical Laboratory located on the Reading University campus and have over thirty years experience working as a professional chemist and scientist. This includes spells in Government Research & Development, the Food Industry, Contract Research and Analysis and Quality Control in the Pharmaceutical Sector.
I am a Chartered Chemist (CChem), Chartered Scientist (CSci) and a Member of The Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC). I also have a 1st Class BSc Honours degree in Chemistry with Biology.
I hold an enhanced DBS check-a legal requirement for anybody working with children. With three grown up children of my own, I understand the needs of students and the pressures and challenges they face and am committed to ensuring that all my students receive the best possible support to fully realise their potential.
I have worked as tutor for the last ten years and am proud that my students consistently achieve excellent results. Previously I have worked for over thirty years as a professional chemist where I held responsibilities for providing tuition to colleagues studying part time for degrees. I have also designed and delivered scientific demonstration lectures to local schools in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry's "Chemistry-The Next Generation" initiative-aimed at generating interest and enthusiasm in chemistry. With a wealth of experience as a practising chemist I am uniquely placed to support the "How Science Works" component of the National Curriculum-the practical based part of all science courses.
My approach to tutoring is "Success through Simplifying Science". I believe passionately in explaining things in a clear no-nonsense way-demystifying the subject being taught and giving clarity to what are often seen as difficult topics. This straight forward approach empowers students by building their confidence and self belief, enabling them to grasp key concepts and fully understand the Course material. With a sound knowledge base students can then refine their problem solving skills and develop effective revision and exam strategies to fully realise their potential.
Aware of the busy lives we lead these days, I adopt a flexible approach-fitting sessions around clients other commitments to make planning and delivery of lessons as convenient as possible. With this in mind, I will travel to your home to deliver lessons and provide an initial visit free of charge to discuss your requirements. Alternatively, I can deliver lessons from my home address if this is more convenient.
Sessions take place in a relaxed atmosphere which enables students to be open and honest about their difficulties and allows problem areas to be quickly identified. Study can then be tailored to the specific needs of the individual student.
