Information About Gordon - Surbiton tutor
This is how 2 referees rated Gordon:
Hello, my name is Gordon and I have been teaching Maths for 27 years. As well as being passionate about Maths I do have time for other things. I enjoy quality family time with my son and two grandsons and I particularly like to stretch my eldest grandson with Maths.
I am enthusiastic about technology and I am now using it to do online Maths Tutoring.
I enjoy travelling and I have developed a keen interest in Thai cooking. I like football, motorbikes and I am researching my family history.
I have extensive experience of teaching Maths. During my career I have been a Head of Maths in four schools and an Assistant Headteacher in one school. I have a BSC (Hons) in Maths as well as a BA and an MA. I have taught GCSE and A level Maths in schools and four Open University Maths courses.
I am an Expert Examiner with Pearson Edexcel for the GCSE Maths. This involves marking around 13 000 questions every summer. I am used to getting results with my students and I am able to identify strengths and areas for improvement. As well as teaching the mathematics and building up confidence I focus on exam technique. This involves knowing where the marks are awarded for working and the ability to manage the time spent during the exam.
Presently I have been working as a maths author for an online resource and I am a maths consultant for BBC Bitesize videos.
Throughout my career I have trained teachers and I currently hold courses for teachers that focus on improving the learning for students.
My approach to tutoring is to focus on my student and I am able to adjust to their needs. I am aware of misconceptions and I am able to check if there are any throughout the tutoring. Once a misconception has been identified I can then rectify it. If my students cannot do a question, then I will modify their language so that they include the word yet at the end.
My experience as an examiner has confirmed to me how important it is to focus on exam technique with my students.
I have found that my approach to tutoring and indeed teaching gets results. Experience has shown me that what works for some students does not work for others and I am constantly looking for alternative methods so that my students are successful.
