Personal Description:

I really enjoy teaching and am excited to be offering flexible tutoring, especially to my local community! I've mostly got a math and science background and my current passion is climate change, which I'm focusing on during a PhD at Imperial College London.

As an eldest sister I've picked up years of experience working with younger people and helping them along and I really believe that everyone has potential and should be given the time and energy to grow into it. Maths and Physics can seem intimidating because of the way they're delivered and treated in schools but they can also be fun and satisfying. I love trying to help people see them that way and so feel happier and more confident learning them.

My education background has been quite varied, which lets me see and teach each subject in different ways:
- UK Primary School to age 8.
- US state schools to age 16.
- US boarding school for two years, graduated cum laude (from Andover, a top school)
- Natural Sciences Tripos (Physics) at Cambridge, earned a strong 1st in each year.
- One year exchange at MIT during third year, 4.9/5.0 GPA.
- PhD in Mathematics of Planet Earth (specifically solar radiation and the entropy cycle) at Imperial College London.

Plus SAT and GRE Physics entrance exams along the way.

Tutoring Experience:

To be honest, this is my first foray into tutoring for pay, but by no means my first attempt at teaching. I've volunteered in a primary school during my undergrad as part of the STIMULUS programme, an experience I found intensely interesting and rewarding, and also lead weekly courses while at MIT for older students on Thermodyanmics and on Matlab Programming through MIT's ESP for a term.

I've always loved talking through concepts during my studies with my peers or those a few years below, sharing understanding or more conventionally "tutoring". The Cambridge system of supervisions has impressed on me the power of one-on-one teaching, a skill which I hope to mimic and develop.

Tutoring Approach:

In line with my experience in supervisions at undergrad, I understand that the crux of tutoring is to help move the cryptic abstract concepts from textbook to brain by reshaping them according to the student's individual needs. There's nothing more exciting as a learner than to get past a critical sticking point in understanding, and this can best be achieved by interactively asking and answering questions. Pinning an academic concept to the tangible every-day world is also essential; finding analogies or experiments which help a concept make sense and stick can be very helpful.

I believe in adapting to what a student wants or needs, but never to the point of being a long-term crutch rather than a help. I'm happy to generate or find more practice questions to demonstrate from and talk through so that the student feels confident to lead when they approach their school-assigned task.
