I am a PhD student at The Institute of Cancer Research, Sutton in The Department of Genetics. I am 2 years in to my PhD and have 2 more left! The aim of my project is to uncover genetic risk factors for leukemia. I am passionate about science and am really enjoying the challenge of working in a research environment! I also love travelling and am a sociable and friendly person.
I tutored two pupils through their OCR Biology A Levels over the last couple of years, helping both students to achieve a higher grade than they had originally been predicted - and both students ended up getting on to their desired course at university! Prior to this I spent 2 years teaching dance at The Wells School of Dancing, Essex, on Saturdays. I taught large classes of children from age 4 to 12 modern and tap dance. I really enjoyed this teaching experience and found I was able to form a good relationship with the children, maintaining discipline but also creating a fun atmosphere. Whilst travelling I spent some time volunteering as an English teacher with children in Peru, a challenging and very rewarding experience.
I am flexible in my approach to tutoring, allowing the pupil to decide which subject areas they need to cover in extra detail away from the classroom. I am also keen to improve exam technique, as this seems to be an area that many students struggle with and I also aim to improve revision technique, as I feel this is often not well taught in school. More recently I have found it useful to include videos in my learning material too.
