Personal Description:

On course for a first class BA in Philosophy (specialising in Mathematical Logic and Metaphysics) at University College London (UCL) with a wealth of experience in tutoring. I completed Maths, Further Maths and Geography (grades: A*A*A respectively) A-Levels in Sheffield while tutoring a number of GCSE students and teaching the Steel Pan instrument to a group of students. Outside of my degree, I enjoy spending time producing music in my studio in Hackney.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 100+ hours experience tutoring students with a range of abilities studying for many different exams. I am particularly confident in tutoring GCSE and A-Level mathematics and philosophy for which I’ve taught in most major exam boards. I've tutored a number of students on the C/D borderline who went on to achieve a B grade in mathematics, while there are others on the A/B borderline who will be going on to achieve very high A* grades this summer. This past year I’ve been tutoring undergraduate students in 2nd year logic and 3rd year undergraduate philosophy courses and so I’m comfortable with tutoring those who are looking to excel in maths and philosophy. I have also taught the Steel Pan instrument to a group of students with additional needs which has given me great confidence in working with students who require additional support in their learning.

Tutoring Approach:

Ultimately, my goal as a tutor is to help students recognise and focus on their academic targets and to encourage the sorts of skills needed in order to achieve. Studying maths and philosophy is a great way to learn a toolbox of methods for approaching theoretical and practical problems and I find that these skills are particularly useful not just in Maths but also in enabling students to recognise and improve their argument structure in essay writing (this has certainly helped me in my philosophy degree!). As a tutor, I hope to make students aware of the skills that we’re practicing and the sorts of applications that their focused study will have both in their chosen subjects and elsewhere in future.

I have found that having a positive and friendly relationship with a tutor is itself motivating in academic study, as such I try to make my students feel confident in their studies and feel comfortable raising any issues or difficulties directly with me. I am a flexible tutor and available out of hours for email/phone questions and last minute help. I'm new to the First Tutors site so our first lesson will be free.
