I am married with two daughters. I am a fully qualified maths teacher with 25 years experience having just finished teaching full-time at a local college. I taught GCSE, A level, BTEC and some functional maths at levels 1 and 2. I also tutor regularly and I want to continue tutoring and helping students understand maths. I try to make maths as easy to understand as possible, and I have many satisfied tutees from my classes and private tutoring over the years. I started teaching maths after working as a mechanical engineer and completing a PCGE in maths at Bath university. Maths has always been my favourite subject and this is why I decided to teach it.
I taught maths in a comprehensive school for 5 years and then did a combination of tutoring and work in a sixth form college through various agencies for 5 years. I worked as a supply teacher for a few months before getting a maths post at a local sixth form college. I worked in my most recent post for 14 years. I have taught pure maths, mechanics and statistics at A level, and I am able to tutor all A level maths syllabuses.
I aim to find out what problems a particular student is having and then talk through these with him/her and try to help him/her understand things from a solid foundation, i.e. by going back to a point he or she feels happy and confident at and building on this understanding. I have found that students normally have sufficient work and problems that they want sorted out, and I am able to accommodate this as I am quite flexible and knowledgeable and I can respond quickly to problems that are presented by a tutee during a tutoring session. I can also advise on what an individual needs to study or practise and can suggest various strategies that would be worth trying to see what works best for any individual. In my experience, most people just need things to be explained to their satisfaction for them to achieve the most in maths. Some people need more time and help than others, but many are genuinely surprised at how easy some things are once they have understood them properly.
