Information About George - Bath tutor - (53 reviews)
This is how 2 referees rated George:
I retired seven years ago as Head of Classics at Kingswood School, Bath, where I taught for 37 years, taking over the department 29 years ago. I inherited a dying department, and passed to my successor a thriving one, attracting large numbers for GCSE and AS and A2 levels. I am happy to teach Latin and Classical Greek to Degree Finals level, and have considerable experience at all levels.
40 years of enthusiastic teaching. Missionary zeal is essential.
I have always believed in a mixture of rigorous linguistic discipline combined with a great sense of fun. Classical Greek and Latin are not particularly easy subjects, but the enjoyment and satisfation can be tremendous.

Alongside my steadily improving language abilities, I've felt my knowledge and understanding of Greek culture grow. He is always able to highlight examples in literature and myth which, again, enliven the texts. He has a very evident passion for the Greeks and their literature and this means tutorials are always enjoyable, informative and engaging.
My son was struggling with Ancient Greek and with his GCSE's a mere few months away we were duly concerned but since engaging George we all now feel as though we've got the best person to help my son acheive the best grade possible. George is unstinting in his teaching and relays a great deal of precise information, which sadly has been lacking in the schools curriculum, bit does so in a manner which is very easy to understand and retain. Having only had a few lessons we are already seeing significant improvement, as in the last practise test my son scored 57/60, which he would never have done before.
I thoroughly recommend George to everyone as I really believe you won't find a better tutor than him!
He also helpfully provides updates which are most useful as we have Skype lessons. George is a very supportive tutor and his love of latin is evident and hopefully infectious!
(Written my daughter, whom George is currently tutoring in Latin and Greek for AS-level.)
1 - George's knowledge of his subject is immense.
2 - George's ability to communicate clever strategies for learning critical information is extraordinary.
3 - George's love of his subject is immediately apparent and absolutely infectious.
4 - George has a wonderful sense of humour, which is critical when faced with the enormity of the task of learning Ancient Greek.
5 - George is rigorous.
I highly recommend George to anyone wishing to further their understanding of Ancient Greek.
I would not hesitate to recommend George as a tutor.
1. an encylopaedic knowledge of his subject.
2. great infectious enthusiasm.
3. an ability to explain concepts in a simple and down-to-earth way.
4. a great deal of patience.
5. a sense of humour.
George is the epitome of the true professional and always marks homework before the following class. He has been teaching us (my son and me) online, as we are based in Spain. The classes are given via Skype. I can only say that if you are looking for a top-notch guy to get you through an exam or simply to expand you knowledge, George is your man. He takes his teaching very seriously, but is always ready to inject a touch of humour to keep the class lively.
After only a few lessons, my son has regained his enthusiasm for Latin!
Hardworking and structured combined with a passion for the subject, George is how all teachers should be - and with a a sense of humour too!
Many thanks George!
Living quite some way away from each other, we've used the Skype video calling service for lessons and to great effect: I feel I've learnt an awful lot already from George and hopefully there's much more to come!
I could not recommend him more highly.
Great rapprot with his clients!
8 weeks after first review. George is the best teacher we have ever experienced he has transformed Sam's latin. I have no interest/understanding of Latin and am not a natural linguist; but feel I could enjoy Latin with George. My son positively looks forward to the lessons and so much of that he has taught Sam is now transferring into other subjects. George is also a really nice person I would recomend him to anyone.
