Personal Description:

I've been teaching for almost 10 years and currently teach at the High School of Glasgow, a school with a strong academic record. My teaching at senior level has helped to ensure that the History Department has performed strongly, both comparatively with other departments and nationally. My favourite thing about my job is the interaction with young people, helping them to see their learning and the subject in a different way. I'm a creative person, I write my own resources constantly, and I love the challenge of appealing to different types of learners through activities and formative marking approaches I am an experienced SQA marker, having been invited to mark for the last three years.

I strongly believe that all pupils have the ability to excel at History, it is famously an academically challenging subject but it can be made accessible for everyone.

Tutoring Experience:

2010 - Present Teacher of History and Philosophy at High School of Glasgow
2009 - 2010 Temporary Teacher of History at Stewarts Melville College
2008 - 2009 Newly Qualified Teacher of History at Gleniffer High School

Throughout my career I have taught pupils at a variety of different levels with a variety of different abilities, catering my approach to the needs of the pupils in front of me. I have taught History to pupils from primary seven all the way up to sixth year. I can teach content, skills and revision techniques to all year groups.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring approach would typically be a one-to-one session lasting roughly an hour. I create an informal relaxed atmosphere so that the learner is unafraid to ask questions no matter how silly they seem. It's so important that pupils recognise that no-one is born with an understanding of how to write a Higher essay or an exhaustive knowledge of Nazi Germany, it takes work and commitment and mistakes are a chance to learn and improve.

As a tutor, I pride myself on adapting my approach and thus catering to the individual. I have an excellent knowledge of what the SQA is looking for at every level and a number of years of experience to draw on in passing that knowledge on to pupils. I use a combination of both summative and formative marking, and am responsive to each individual in pursuing a method that works best for them, through engaging in a dialogue about how they learn most successfully.

Finally, I believe that every child I tutor will end our sessions feeling more positive, confident and encouraged.
