Personal Description:

Hello there, my name is Gemma and I am a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. At present I am working on an NHS Urgent Care project, investigating how people make sense of and use the NHS urgent care system.

I am a motivated, creative and critically engaged social scientist and lecturer.

My research focus is in the area of critical and comparative approaches to social policy and social development in both international and domestic contexts, and builds on a strong foundation of research training in social science research methods. It is also informed by UK and European political/influencing roles, and tri-sector experience in academic research and teaching, social enterprise and community engagement.

I am 35 and when I am not working I can be found running along Southsea beach; rain, wind or shine!

Tutoring Experience:

I have lectured for both undergraduate politics students (Module Code POI 1511) and undergraduate and post-graduate environmental health students requiring social science research methods training (Module Code PRS 4199), at Middlesex University.

I enjoy the challenge of preparing teaching and learning materials which ensure the needs of the students, and the defined learning objectives of the units/course, are met.

I will begin lecturing at the University of Southampton in September 2016 where I will be involved in tutoring PhD students and leading lectures and seminars around policy analysis and development and social science methods. I will be focusing on research full-time until then.

Tutoring Approach:

I am incredibly passionate about methods of teaching delivery, using e-learning methods, group work (where appropriate) and ‘real life’ scenarios, where possible, to ensure that content and methods of delivery meet the learning needs of the students and the defined learning objectives of the modules.

I have received positive student feedback, with some students even choosing to incorporate qualitative methods into their research projects, where they had not considered this as an option before receiving my lectures.

Despite such positive feedback I am mindful that lecturing/tutoring is a process of development and refinement and therefore I ensure that I reflect on lectures/tutoring given and analyse where I could improve. Especially regarding content (to ensure current issues are incorporated, to keep sessions alive and relevant) and timings.

I am very cheerful and approachable and can adapt my style for those who need a structured or a more gentle approach to learning.

The most important tool I use is for the student to work collaboratively with me to define their learning objectives and how they prefer their sessions to run.
