My name is Gavin, I'm a 30 year old Mechanical Engineering graduate, currently working in aircraft maintenance.
I'm friendly, easy to get on with, and patient.
I started tutoring at the start of the academic year in 2013 and continued through to May 2014, preparing several young adults for their Standard Grade/Higher exams. Many of my tutees met with success, achieving or exceeding the goals they had set out, and of those who fell short of their goals, significant improvements in understanding were achieved alongside improved exam results.
During university, and now in my working life, I have spent a large amount of time explaining complex problems/topics to peers and superiors in both verbal and written form. This has allowed me to develop a certain mental dexterity, which allows me to put across an idea from several perspectives, which is extremely useful when it comes to teaching.
My approach to tutoring varies based on the desired outcome, whether it's assisted learning alongside classes, preparation for exams, or just for fun. Sometimes structure and practice is necessary, sometimes a more relaxed approach is best.
In all cases though learning is about getting information into your brain and then keeping it there. There are a variety of tools we can use to help us store and recall information, attach meaning to information, and make associations or links between incoming information and what we already know.
We all think and learn slightly differently so figuring out how your brain works is the best way to teach it effectively and efficiently.
And I try to keep it fun and interesting, a positive and engaged brain is always going to learn more.
