Gareth

I am an innovative teacher, who seeks to try to get the best out of all. I really enjoy teaching and one of the best things is seeing a child conquer something they have thought impossible. As a science graduate, I love the connections across the different subjects and have a love of history.

Tutoring Experience

I am in my 8th year of teaching and am currently the Head of Maths in a SEND school. Previously, I was the Primary Curriculum Lead in a Primary/Middle-SEND school. I have taught in an OFSTED rated 'Good' inner city school in Nottingham and OFSTED rated 'Outstanding' school in Stoke-on-Trent. My experience is across all year groups in Key Stage 2 (predominantly Years 5 and 6) and also in Key Stage 3.

I have a good experience working with children, who have a range of SEND conditions primarily ASD and challenging behaviour, and a range of specific learning difficulties like dyslexia.

Tutoring Approach

I use the Mastery approach to teaching Maths; concentrating on the fluency aspect, before looking into proving concepts by demonstrating reasoning, and then bringing together different strands of Maths into problem solving; showing the techniques to calmly look through the problem in bitesized chunks.

For English, I split this up in to 3 parts, writing, reading and spelling. With reading, I prefer to teach using the Whole Class Reading concept; this works well on developing an large vocabulary bank, building retrieval and comprehension skills, and growing the talents of deducing and inferring an authors meanings. The writing skills follow a similar path in starting small, and using building blocks to enhance and develop a child's grammatical ability, and using simple templates to structure and shape a piece.
