I am a qualified and experienced secondary school English teacher and GCSE English examiner (AQA) with recent experience of both teaching and examining the new English GCSE specification. I am therefore able to give expert advice on how to tackle the English Language and Literature exams. I offer after-school, holiday and weekend tuition as well as pre-exam holiday booster/revision day sessions for groups of students or individuals. I studied English and Philosophy at Durham University where I obtained a 2:1 BA Hons and completed my PGCE teacher training at Roehampton University in London in 2010. I have been teaching and tutoring ever since. I am also experienced in tutoring at Primary level and have a proven track record of successfully preparing students for 11+ exams.
I am currently doing a part-time MA in Creative Writing at Exeter University so will be able to help students in developing their descriptive and narrative writing skills.
I taught at an OFSTED Outstanding secondary school in North London for 2 years after my PGCE and then worked another 2 years in a mixed comprehensive in Wandsworth where I developed further skills in pedagogy and classroom management. I have also been a private tutor in my spare time and have coached a number of students through to achieve success in their common entrance exams, GCSEs and A Levels. I am currently teaching English at the Steiner Academy in Exeter.
At KS2 and KS3 I believe learning should be fun and student-led and so I aim to ensure lessons are engaging and try to act as a facilitator to learning where ever possible. This requires that lessons are planned properly and are part of a well-thought out scheme of learning. I absolutely love teaching and being able to tutor one-to-one is a great opportunity to see students make rapid progress in their learning.
At GCSE and A Level I am able to teach students of English how to improve essay writing skills and how to develop skills in textual analysis and creative writing.
