This is how 2 referees rated Frances:
I am a 61 year old, retired Teacher of English and am currently self-employed as a Personal Tutor.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked in the theatre, in Community Education, youth work and a primary school. As well as having a real love of my subject, I have a great deal of experience of working with children and young people.
I have taught English from 5-15 Level A to Advanced Higher, and have taught using the Curriculum for Excellence in schools in East Lothian and Edinburgh. I am familiar with the new Advanced Higher, Higher, National 4 and National 5 qualifications and have tutored many students working towards these. I have experience of teaching students with Additional Learning Needs, which I found particularly rewarding. I worked for several years as a Training Officer at Edinburgh YMCA, during which time I planned and ran Life and Social Skills courses for young people aged 16-18 years.
I also have experience of working with small groups and individuals, including those for whom English was an Additional Language, on Basic Literacy.
In addition to tutoring students working towards SQA exams, I have tutored Primary School children and helped young people to prepare to sit entrance exams for independent schools. As well as children and teenagers, I have helped mature students working towards Higher English, and some requiring help with Literacy.
As a parent of two grown-up children, as well as a teacher, I am well aware of the pressures experienced by young people today. I provide a comfortable, relaxed environment and work with my students on areas in which they feel they need extra support. I have built up a substantial bank of resources, which, in addition to Past Papers, forms the basis of the work we do. Opportunities to succeed are crucial to helping a student to progress and these are built into each student's study plan.
