I graduated with a First Class honours degree in Biomedical Sciences from Durham University in 2014, and am now back in Durham studying for a research Masters in skin ageing. I got an A in Biology A2 level, and A* for GCSE Science. As I am studying myself I appreciate how stressful it can be at times! I don't have exams myself this year which means I will be available to provide full support during the school exam periods.
I have recently signed up to a volunteering teaching program through the University. Also, as a key component of my degree I will be working as a demonstrator in undergraduate laboratory sessions.
I have quite a relaxed approach - I am there to help consolidate the learning that the student is already receiving at school, not to be the teacher. My role is to go through whatever subject the student chooses each week, moving at a pace that they are comfortable with. I plan to set a little bit of homework at the end of each session - this is merely to assess if the student has understood what we have covered and we will go through it together at the beginning of the next session to double check that they are ready to move on.
