I am a very experienced Mathematics teacher and former Head of Key Stage Four Mathematics at my school. My love of mathematics came about whilst studying with the Open University twenty years ago. It was always a subject that I found difficult whilst at school, however the Open University course was so well written and relevant, it really filled in the missing pieces of my knowledge. I had always wanted to teach and it gave me the determination to help other students who also lacked confidence and/or found the subject difficult. After my Open University degree courses I transferred to the University of Wales College Newport to complete a two-year fast track degree in Secondary Mathematics Education with ICT. Once qualified in 2001, I started my teaching career at the very successful St. Mary’s RC High School in Hereford and remained teaching there until this year. I have now moved into tutoring full time.
I teach all age and ability groups, with a typical student aged from 10 upwards. I am able to help students prepare for their Year 6 SAT's, GCSE and IGCSE examinations. I also teach students who are home schooled and/or live abroad. I I particularly excel at helping students who lack confidence and belief in their own ability, whatever their age. I am able to quickly identify with students who struggle to apply their skills and have a fear of failure. I use a range of techniques and methods to tailor my teaching towards students own individual needs. My mission has always been to ensure that each student fulfils their potential. Key to this has been teaching lessons that students enjoy and encouraging them to challenge themselves and to take responsibility for their own learning. They also need to feel comfortable and confident to talk about their concerns and problem areas. Removed
I have undertaken tutoring each year throughout my teaching career and have found it to be a very rewarding experience. I have now moved into tutoring full time. I always address common misconceptions as they arise in each topic area and encourage students to enjoy the difficulties and challenges that naturally occur in their learning. This helps to build resilience and give them confidence when working on unfamiliar questions in exam situations. Our tutoring sessions are solely focused on the students needs; whether this be working on topics they're finding difficult at school, to test preparation or revision for their SAT's, GCSEs or IGCSE examinations. Feedback from students and parents is overwhelmingly positive, with most commenting on how much they're enjoying their tutoring sessions and finding the topics they found difficult much easier than before. I am able to offer home tuition or online lessons using Skype and an online whiteboard that both the student and I can work on at the same time; it’s just like sitting in the same room together and very time efficient for all concerned.
