Personal Description:

I tutor English, ESOL, Psychology, History and Study Skills and have been doing since 2009. My first ever student went from an E to an A* in English Literature and I'm always keen to relive my first success. I've got a professional qualification in teaching English as a Second Language, a degree in History, with a semester spent at UIUC in the USA, a postgraduate certificate in Psychology of Education and I'm currently a second year Speech and Language Therapy Student at the University of Manchester. I've published several study guides for English Literature, with more on the way and two guides for Abstract Reasoning for the UKCAT. I've got experiences of working in both law and in healthcare and in working abroad.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring since 2007 upon gaining an accredited Cambridge certificate in teaching English as a Foreign Language. I branched out into teaching both literacy and academic subjects in 2009 and have been tutoring young people in these subjects ever since. My first student was an A level student who I helped to raise her modular grade in English Literature A level from an E to full marks. Based on this result, I gained further work as a tutor for one of the top-rated tutoring agencies in the country. I have tutored asylum seekers, people with dyslexia and learning disabilities, looked after children and businesses, working in students' homes, schools and the workplace. My teaching experience extends to all the major exam boards at GCSE and A Level, as well as having taught students at Leeds Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester and the University of Leeds.

I have taught most of the major texts for English Literature GCSE, including Never Let Me Go, An Inspector Calls, and Pride and Prejudice as well as some lesser known texts such as Silas Marner. I have taught numerous texts at A Level English Literature and a broad array of topics for History GCSE and A Level.

I have experience tutoring all the exam boards for all of these subjects. For English Literature, I have extensive experience with the new specification for both AQA specifications and Edexcel. In addition to the study guides I have published for the old specification in AQA English, I have guides due out in late 2016 for Wilfred Owen's War Poems, Othello, the AQA tragedy anthology, the AQA pre-1900 Love Through The Ages anthology, The Great Gatsby, and Othello. I also have another study guide due out for essay writing skills.

For History, I have tutored all the major exam boards and many different time periods. I have taught the new specifications for AQA and Edexcel over the last year. With a postgraduate certificate in Psychology of Education from the University of Manchester I have moved on to tutoring Psychology at A Level and GCSE and I have taught all the major exam boards for this as well. My background in ESOL and Speech and Language Therapy has also led to me teaching a growing number of students in A Level English Language

Tutoring Approach:

If I had to sum it up in a line, it would be: THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS!

I've got more than a line, though, so I'll explain that one a bit further. I teach all my students to the highest standards and that means details. If you're studying English or History, you'll know a text or a source better than the writer did by the end of a session. But it's not just what I teach, it's how I teach. I want to know what obstacles you're facing and what your previous experiences are. Once I've worked out what's preventing you from fulfilling your potential, I can start helping you do that.

As you might be able to tell, I like to add value to learning, not just repeat what is taught to you in the classroom. Very often, my students express concern that they understand what their work ought to look like but they do not know how to produce it, particularly when pneumonic approaches to essay writing such as PETEL and PEA have been used. So I aim to teach the underlying processes of the subjects I'm teaching. For English, I teach you how to analyse on three different levels, considering the primary and secondary meanings of the basic words and sounds of English and their arrangement in a sentence, moving on to considering the who, the what, the why, the when and the where, before finally contextual factors. I teach you how to extract that information and use it to express meaning. In History and Psychology I teach you the fundamental skills of evaluating evidence as an integral component of your essay writing. If you feel like the sources or a text are the getting in the way of you writing a good essay, I'm going to aim to change that. I don't let you get away with generic work; I make sure that you develop your own style of writing and that your arguments are as close to indisputable as they can get.

I also encourage you to read widely. Whilst this may seem like repetition of what you're hearing from your parents or your teachers (apparently I was guilty of a slight exaggeration earlier), I can't stress its importance enough. This can easily make the difference of an entire grade in any of the subjects I teach, so I'm handy with my lists of recommendations!
