My background is in Psychology and I have a PhD in Cognitive Science. My own research focuses on mental health and developmental disorders - particularly autism. I am passionate about research, clinical care and service provision. Following my PhD in Sydney, and two post-doc positions in London and Seville, I have decided to work freelance as an science editor, proofreader, tutor and supervisor Removed). I still collaborate with researchers in London, Seville and Bristol, but also spend time pursuing my own interests (current speciality is mind-body interactions and the power of yoga!) and working with adults with mental health conditions (I volunteer at the WomensCentre in Huddersfield).
I'd love to hear what you are working on, and what you would like help with. If I think I am not the best person to help you I will say so! Please get in touch - no charge for a discussion! Also very happy to send through my CV (or you can find it on my website, along with details of the research projects I've worked on and my publications).
I started tutoring school children for 'The Tutors Group' in London in 2002. Since then, I have continued to work as a tutor alongside my research and clinical work for about 15 years. I have always enjoyed helping other people learn and have developed a lot of skill in tailoring my tutoring approach to suit the pupil. I have taught A-level, GCSE and younger, also special needs. I have supervised numerous BSc and MSc students during my University career (including leading Research Projects module on the Mental Health in Intellectual Disabilities MSc at King's College, London).
I am now focusing on higher education (A-Level and beyond) as I'm passionate about helping early-career researchers develop their skills. I know how difficult it can be to get started in academia and sometimes a few nudges in the right direction can really help a higher-ed student flourish, and make their life a whole lot easier!
I am also employed by the 'The Skills Network' at the moment who offer online tuition and training for adult learners.
I'm interested in how students learn in different ways, and will make a genuine effort to find a style of teaching and tuition that will help you understand concepts and improve skills such as writing for science, reading research articles (without spending hours trawling through complicated papers!), organising your own thoughts and ultimately communicating your ideas.
If you want help with a particular piece of work, I will usually do that by making comments on your document and suggesting changes, and explaining why I am making these suggestions. This will help you to improve your own skills and build your confidence. Also I will follow this up with a Skype / phone session to explain things further if this would be helpful.
If you want help in a more general subject area, for example if you are struggling to understand something from a course, we can arrange a tutoring session via Skype (or a series of sessions if needed). If you are based in Huddersfield we can arrange to meet in person if you prefer.
