I am currently working as at a special education school in Poole, which I enjoy immensely. My main instruments are clarinet and piano, which I have been playing for over 20 years. I used to work in the Participate team at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and before this, I taught music in a variety of settings in Greater Manchester. I am passionate about music education because I understand that music has the power to inspire others and to change lives.
During university, I worked for two music services as a clarinet and piano tutor. I taught in numerous primary and secondary schools in Greater Manchester leading one-to-one lessons, small group sessions, and whole class tuition. Some students focused on working towards music exams, whereas others concentrated on exploring repertoire and creative composition. The ability of students varied from complete beginner to advanced. In addition to teaching in schools, I also taught several adults privately, who ranged from complete beginner to intermediate.
As well as instrumental tutoring, I have experience in leading creative music workshops with large groups of children and young people. The aim of these workshops are to inspire participants to be as musical as possible, no matter what ability, instrument, or experience they have. I have also been involved in music therapy workshops; for example, I assisted with weekly music therapy sessions at a special education school, as well as teaching one-to-one piano lessons for a charity supporting adults with severe mood disorders.
At the school I am currently working at, I work with the other music teachers to create practical music sessions for students aged 7 - 16. All pupils at the school have a physical disability, and the majority also have learning and/or cognitive disabilities. The level of music ability ranges from beginner to advanced, with many students playing instruments such as piano, drums, trumpet, and guitar. Some students also play instruments using assistive music technology, such as the clarion.
I follow a student-led approach, meaning I listen to what a student wants to learn, explore, and play. I encourage them to think about and track their own progress, helping them to set their own goals and to have some control in the direction they are going. I can focus on guiding a pupil through graded exams or concentrate on exploring new repertoire and creative music-making - whichever route will help them to reach their full musical potential. I always play my instrument with a student when I am teaching and encourage them to experiment and listen to new music.
As I currently work at a special education school, I frequently teach music to students with physical and/or learning disabilities. If my student has a disability, I will work with them to explore the best way to make music. My lesson structure and approach can be adjusted to suit the needs of any pupil, as I believe it is important to make music lessons accessible to everyone.
If a student is under 18, I will communicate frequently with their parents/guardians to provide feedback about their music lessons. I will also provide advice on other musical opportunities the student could take part in, such as ensembles, bands, and competitions.
