Personal Description:

Hello! I am a trainee-librarian looking for part-time private tutoring work in English, Maths, and study skills. I am actively engaged with accessibility issues around education and have experience mentoring a woman with autism.

I hold a BA(Hons) and MA in English Literature from Lancaster University, with a First and Distinction respectively. I also have an A grade at A Level Mathematics and a B grade at A Level French Studies. I received an A* for my English Literature A Level.

I am currently studying via distance-learning for an MA in Library and Information Services Management with the University of Sheffield.

I am interested in helping others with a variety of subjects and topics, from study and research skills, English Literary Studies (up to undergraduate level), Mathematics (up to GCSE level), and French (up to GCSE level). I aim to improve a student's grades as well as increase their confidence in study or in a particular subject they have difficulty with. I would also be happy to support anyone who simply has an interest in a topic, but is not involved in formal schooling.

While I was lucky enough to find that formal schooling methods suited my learning styles, the same is not true for many students, and I hope to be able to improve access to and enjoyment of learning through one-to-one tutoring.

Tutoring Experience:

As part of my current role within a library, I have experience supporting students with a variety of problems, and my approach emphasises the reduction of the student's anxiety concerning the issue at hand or the need to ask for help.

Over the past year I have provided one-to-one support to a partially-sighted and autistic student and I aim to stay up to date with the teaching methods and materials suited to SEN students, especially when their previous educational experiences may have lacked the resources to help them, thus placing them at a disadvantage when it comes to seeking educational support.

I am training to become a qualified librarian, an important part of which is providing one-to-one tutoring and support, and through this course I have learnt information literacy, teaching and learning theories and practice, and created some online teaching materials.

My educational history has given me a good awareness of the required standards at different levels of education, and my current librarianship connection allows me to stay up-to-date as these standards evolve.

Tutoring Approach:

"Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

I would hope to find ways to engage a student in a particular topic by relating it to their personal interests and activities. If this is not possible or relevant I would persist in presenting the subject/topic from as many different angles as possible to demystify it. I would hope to identify the point at which the student is encountering difficulties, and work at reducing/removing any uncertainty and anxiety around the subject.

I would hope to discover a student's favourite learning styles (writing/reading/auditory/speaking/doing), and develop an approach to learning incorporating this preference. I would also however, include practices which may help develop the learning styles the student is less comfortable with, to promote a more balanced approach to learning for any future endeavours. I am interested in the use of multi-sensory learning and teaching approaches, particularly concerning SEN students.

I would hope to teach nuanced ways of reading and writing, as well as encouraging individual thought, to help them aim for higher results. Exam board guidelines would be adhered to throughout this process, but I believe it is the perceived rigidity of these guides which can dissuade some students from achieving their best. Increasing class sizes in many schools also make it more difficult for some students to get the attention and individual encouragement they require to excel in this subject, a lack which I would work hard to make up for.
