I am an experienced teacher of Latin, Ancient Greek/New Testament Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History. I offer preparation for A level and IB, coaching for Latin and Ancient Greek GCSE, and Oxbridge Classics preparation and New Testament Greek for 1st year Theology students. I enormously enjoy teaching and sharing my life long love of classics.
I use online platforms such as Skype, Facetime and Zoom and face to face teaching in the Tunbridge Wells area.
After 20 years teaching classics in schools I have tutored for a number of years and have worked with students from primary through to secondary and university level as well as adult learners. I have taught OCR Latin, Ancient Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History syllabuses, plus WJEC, IGCSE and IB Latin syllabuses and I am an OCR specialist assessor for Ancient Greek A level.
I am a specialist teacher of Latin and Ancient Greek. My approach is traditional and grammar based with a strong focus on reading. Rote learning, especially of noun tables, can be challenging and time consuming and I try to help find ways round this to make language learning accessible and rewarding. I recognise the need to be flexible in response to differing needs and learning styles. As well as grammar and vocabulary, and techniques for tackling unseen translation, I offer help with detailed literary analysis of exam texts designed to help answer GCSE and A level commentary questions.
My approach often focuses on essay writing which is a crucial skill. I can help you to achieve structure and clarity by building up essays from scratch, using a bank of practice questions, and showing how to reference modern scholarship where necessary.
Another key skill is exam technique and preparation. I offer module revision and question practice up to the exam day. If you are struggling with a particular aspect of the syllabus I can guide you through the material with the help of extensive resources which I have built up.
Confidence and enthusiasm for learning are essential and I offer friendly support throughout my tutoring. Everyone learns best in their own way and I try to respond to each student's individual learning style. My reviews indicate that I have been successful where there are issues of language handling and critical thinking that need addressing. Learning is a two way process and with commitment on both sides remarkable results are achievable. My approach with school/college students is one of supporting and complementing classroom studies, however I also have considerable experience of tutoring home educated students.
I recognise the importance of flexible tutoring, often at short notice, to fit around your timetable. You decide when and how often you need help, whether one-off, weekly, or more or less frequently. I usually offer sessions of one to two hours, sometimes shorter, plus a free, no commitment, trial session to find out what’s needed.
I offer topic or module revision and ongoing exam preparation plus one-off assignment/essay feedback. I am also able to tailor and quote for a full GCSE or A level course for home learning and I enjoy teaching beginners and mature students. I strongly encourage parental involvement in learning and I always keep parents informed of progress and welcome feedback from parents and students.
My charges include provision of resources and assignment feedback within reason. I ask for payment either in advance or immediately following tuition and I may make an additional charge to reflect travelling costs.
