I have a varied teaching background and am Primary trained. I have spent some time working in Germany as well as around the UK. I have a child myself and understand the issues when you feel that your child requires additional support to help them to get through the rigors of school life and to avoid them not getting the grades that they are capable of. I teach within the Primary Sector although I have taught young adults and adults in the past up to university standard. As a primary teacher I can generally teach across the board, However Maths and English are the areas that many children seem to need support in although i would consider other subjects too. I have been teaching for 18 years and have had many experiences within this time, all of which has shaped me into the fun , caring person I am today.
As mentioned above I have had lots of different experiences including those working with adults and have supported lots of children though their studies at one time or another. I have taken the lead and embraced lots of the new ideas and ways of thinking about English and Maths which include talk for writing and tales toolkit and have some in house training on both. I have also embraced the new maths Mastery approach and encourage students to think about how they arrived at an answer rather than just getting one. I keep up to date with initiatives pool ideas with others to create the best possible sessions for the students I deal with. I try to make things as practical or visual as I can when learning a new concept so that we have time to explore and get this right before committing to pen and paper.
I am an adaptive tutor, I like to get to know my student in the first instance what they like and what exactly they are finding difficult or think they are finding difficult. I often find that where possible taking things back to a practical approach can often work best as this enables the student to be able to physically carry something out or use it in practice before they have to think in the abstract. I am also prepared I like to plan the session ahead but feel that the student also needs to take ownership of this and so together we discuss the next steps and what needs to be undertaken. I am firm but fair, but am as I have said adaptable and am willing to work alongside other professionals should this be appropriate.
