I hold a PhD in English Literature from Trinity College Dublin. I have 5 years' experience as a university lecturer in English Literature, having taught at Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, the University of Derby, Royal Holloway University of London, and the University of Birmigham. I am currently writing my first monograph, 'The Forest and the EcoGothic' with Palgrave and tutoring part-time.
I have taught English Literature at five different universities: Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, the University of Derby, Royal Holloway University of London, and most recently at the University of Birmingham. I have delivered lectures, seminars, and tutorials across a variety of modules, and I have set and graded coursework and exams. I have an award for teaching excellence in Higher Education from CAPSL (The Centre of Academic Practice and Student Learning) and have a certificate in recognition of helping the University of Derby to achieve 'gold' status in the TEFL (Teaching Excellence Framework). I have also worked for AQA in marking English Literature and Language exam scripts and worked before my Higher Education as an LSA (Learning Support Assistant) at Chaucer School in Canterbury, and part-time as an English Literature tutor.
I enjoy working one-on-one and really getting to know how the tutee thinks. It is important to me to inspire the tutee to really care about the work they are doing and to be interested in it beyond the mere dimension of passing the exam (which, in my experience, simultaneously helps to achieve this). I find debating the texts in question extremely beneficial, as asking the tutee searching questions forces them to justify their argument whilst being aware of and arguing against contradictory critical approaches at all times. I enjoy making worsksheets and mind maps for the student that provoke thought, whilst simultaneously setting them homework to produce similar materials of their own. I am happy to read over numerous essay drafts and in the build up to exams I highly encourage timed essays, so that working under time constraints becomes second nature to the student and stress-free.
