Private Maths and Physics Tuition in Mindrum

I’m a qualified teacher with over 17 years’ experience of teaching Physics and Electronics at A-level. I come from London but now live in Town Yetholm, a few miles south of Kelso..

Tutoring Experience

After gaining qualified teacher status in Physics, I taught at New College, Swindon for 16 years. Subjects taught included Physics and Electronics at A-level together with GCSE Astronomy and Geology. I’m familiar with all the main exam boards (including SQA, AQA, OCR, WJEC and EdExcel) and have experience of helping OCR with checking exam questions for A-level Electronics. I’ve been tutoring students privately since 2014, mainly in Physics and Electronics to A-level (Advanced Higher level) and Maths from GCSE to AS (Nat 5 to Higher level).

Tutoring Approach

I believe that one-to-one tuition and individual help can make a big difference to students’ understanding of the subject and their exam grades. There are many different ways of learning and personal tuition offers the chance to try different approaches. My own style is informal, very interactive and quite visual, but sometimes mathematical or rule-based methods suit people better and I’m happy to adapt my teaching methods to find what works best.

Students will also need different things throughout the year, and my approach becomes more exam-oriented as the year goes on. Some students need clear explanation of basic concepts as a foundation for building on. Others need help with how to approach exam questions, both the calculations and writing. Either way, it’s my job as a tutor to get the student thinking as this will be the only way for them to learn, and perhaps even enjoy learning the subject!

I enjoy tutoring and have had good results with students, improving on their predicted exam results by several grades. As well as Physics, I can also teach Maths up to AS level so offer some flexibility there to target any weak areas without needing to arrange to have another tutor.
