Maths and Physics Teacher in Oxford

Hello, my name is Dylan and I come from a small town in North Devon. I went to a local school and sixth form college before moving to London for university, and I now live and work in Oxford.

I studied Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London with a semester abroad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I graduated with First Class Honours, ranking top of my class.

I am now 2.5 years into my career in engineering. I work for a fast growing spin-out company from Oxford University called Alloyed. I lead a small team of engineers, working to develop the next generation of lightweight materials for metal 3D printing.

I am a sociable, friendly person and I love spending time surfing and travelling when I'm not working.

Tutoring Experience

I have a great deal of experience in tutoring. I have tutored GCSE, AS Level, A-Level and Adult Learners regularly for the last 7 years, and I have extensive experience in both face-to-face and online tutoring. I have tutored many people over the last few years across a wide range of different abilities and ages. I welcome any tutee - no matter what their age or current understanding level is, so long as they are willing to learn and want to achieve the best that they can academically.

Having completed my own GCSE's and A-Levels relatively recently compared to many tutors, I am very aware of the pressure that many young people are under to succeed. I want to help turn this pressure into a positive influence by helping students to enjoy their studies rather than seeing them as a chore, and to avoid unnecessary stress around exams.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is simple: I deliver engaging and interesting lessons that encourage students to be genuinely interested in what they are learning and to realise the importance of doing the very best that they can in their qualifications. A great education is empowering because it opens doors for you to pursue your passions, so I am determined to help as many people as I can to seize the opportunities that their education provides.

Everyone has a slightly different learning style, and I like to establish this in the initial stages of teaching. This allows me to adapt my sessions so that they are tailored to the tutee's learning style and ability. I am a very friendly person, and I think that it's important to build up a good relationship with the people that I teach, as this makes the lessons more effective and enjoyable for the student.

In most cases, I base my sessions on working through past exam questions as this allows students to practise the techniques that will be directly tested in exams. However, I will often divert from this in order to explain key concepts in a more general sense, before returning to questions to test understanding in a particular area.

I have pursued engineering because I like to understand the way that things work and be able to apply this to make positive changes in society. Hence, in my lessons, I try to give students a background to where the science and maths is used in the real world, as I think that this helps to make the subject more relatable and interesting.
