I have worked and volunteered with children of all ages for the last 15 years in various roles, from primary age children, through middle school, to teenagers at college. I have worked extensively within the UK as well as overseas - including Saudi Arabia, Madagascar and Brazil.
As a father of 3 and a primary school teacher, who has also sought specialist tutoring support for his own daughter, I recognise the value of what can be achieved through one on one tutoring, which can not be replicated in a 30 to 1 classroom environment... an hour with me will be equivalent to a week in school.
My daughter sailed through her entrance exams to all three independent schools that she applied for.
I am a Year 5 classroom teacher, where my maths specialism is of significant use preparing children for their SATS/entrance exams at the end of Year 6. I have a passion for KS2 maths - years 3 to 6 - and am 100% fluent with the entire curriculum.
It is my belief that children should understand mathematics rather than just be able to give the correct answer with no understanding of how they got there; enabling children to justify and reason their answers which is a skill that is becoming increasingly important with the new National Curriculum.
It is my driving goal to offer children dynamic and inclusive sessions irrespective of ability or background - focussing on the needs of each individual: both consolidating and extending knowledge while tackling areas of weakness to ensure the best possible outcome whether that be success within the classrroom, in 11+/SATS or simply increased confidence in children who struggle with maths when answering questions or weekly tests - I specifically am able to identify crucial gaps in your child's knowledge which may be preventing them to progress onto more advanced mathematics essential for aforementioned exams and their future options.
For beginners, or those struggling, I will look to make sure they have a solid understanding of the 4 main operations and move onto fractions/decimals and percentages using language and techniques that they will find extremely easy to understand.
Another aspect I look to develop in your child's resilience and independence in solving maths problemsand using their reasoning skills which is often the key to success when faced with new/demanding tasks that they may be unfamiliar with.
I recognise the importance of being able to adapt and alter sessions to best meet their emerging needs to maintain a flexible approach depending on ongoing progress and attainment
