Personal Description:

I am an experienced teacher with an MA Joint Honours 2.1 Degree in History and Geography, a Post Graduate Certificate of Education, gained with Distinction in both subjects, and a Post Graduate Masters Degree in Education. I have a great deal of enthusiasm for my subjects. I have gained a good reputatation over a long number of years with students and their families. I have an ability to inspire learners. I am able to motivate them to achieve at the highest of levels. Exam technique is one of my specialities.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over twenty years of experience in the teaching of History, Geography and Modern Studies, up to and including, Advanced Higher level. I have worked as a curriculum developer and I am up to date with recent theory and practice.

I have been employed, in the past in a seniour management position, and I have experience in teaching the social subjects at College Level. I have one years experience at University level. I have an excellent record as a Tutor in History and Geography. Many of my students are now at highly regarded Universities. I have had three years experience as a head Teacher/Director of Studies in a British International school in the Middle East.

Excellent refernces are available.

Tutoring Approach:

I use all the skills required of a teacher. My approach is to gain an understanding of the learning styles of each and every individual. This is a holistic approach to teaching and learning and in this way it is important to establish individual prior knowledge.

As an important first step, I discuss with the student, the areas within each subject, or sub topic, that require attention. I can then focus my strategies during each tutorial in order to deal with these specific areas while, at the same time, paying close attention to the complete subject/course. This is more likely to achieve an efficient use of time.

I am skilled in my ability to communicate concepts, ideas, theories and exam techniques. It is important also to develop a productive rapport with students in order to enhance and develop learning in the subject. Students will need to be well prepared before each tutorial. Homework, independent study, background reading and research will be a part of this.

For Secondary school students, sessions that are one and a half hours in duration tend to achieve the best long term outcomes. They are long enough to reflect briefly on the learning from the previous tutorial and leave a substantial amount of time to cover new ground… Weekly sessions of this duration keep the course of learning focussed, while it is important to remember that the student has other academic commitments.
