I am a dedicated and experienced ex-deputy head teacher whose last post was in an independent 3-18 school. I have written several educational texts and also awarded GCSE and A level grades as a contracted Chair of Examiners. I have set, reviewed and approved question papers for examination boards. I work for OFQUAL as a subject expert. I do have high expectations when working with my students but I can very quickly identify any misconceptions and weak areas which may cause a barrier to progression. I pride myself on motivating and instilling an enthusiasm and love of learning in my tutees, encouraging them to perform to the best of their ability. I aim to make lessons enjoyable and challenging. I teach Computer Science and IT and also very successfully prepare students for 11+

Tutoring Experience

I have more than 35 years teaching experience having taught in independent schools, FE and HE colleges and also Universities. I have taught Business Studies, ICT, Computer Science and Maths as well as primary English. I teach ICT/Computer Science to post graduate level. I teach all other subjects listed here to GCSE level. I have helped many students to attain top grades and sometimes they have attained full UMS in their modules. All of my personal tutees have been able to progress to their choice of University. Many of my personal tutees have leapt from grade C/D level to A/A* level within a very short space of time.

I prepare children for 11+ and take children from year 4. For children whose second language is English in particular I have been able to tutor them to secure a pass. Similarly those who have difficulty with Maths and are willing to work for me, practising as instructed at home always manage to secure a pass mark. My methods for teaching Non Verbal and Verbal Reasoning have assisted many children as they are often baffled by the type of questions they are likely to encounter until the different types of questions are explained together with a method for attaining a correct answer.

Tutoring Approach

I start by assessing the needs of each student, establishing the level of knowledge acquired and identifying any gaps. I then establish the preferred learning style of my students reviewing this frequently as needs change. I always encourage my students to be open and honest about their level of understanding and we work together as a team. I am particularly keen on developing examination technique and any set work will be based on past papers. As a past Chair of Examiners I have invaluable experience to draw upon in this respect.

For younger students wanting Maths and Computing tuition or 11+ preparation my approach is slightly different and after initial assessment I develop a strategy to suit each child based on their learning styles, aiming to strengthen any weak areas and build capability across the entire range of topics. Please note places are limited due to a variety of commitments and because I only tutor a handful of tutees so that I can focus on them individually.
