Hi! I am a 50 something young lady with three children. I have lived and worked as a teacher in Botswana for almost 30 years and this is where we brought up our children. Two of the three have since flown the nest and it won't be long 'till the youngest does the same. Recently I have returned to the UK to try and set up a base. We are living in Essex in the same village as my mother and brother.
I have taught in Botswana, USA and the UK. My main subject is Biology and I have taught this at A Level, IGCSE, GCSE and IB. I have taught Combined Science (Trilogy) at IGCSE, GCSE and KS3. My students' ability has ranged from highly academic; I have students who are now studying at top universities around the world including Ox/bridge and all of the Ivy League Schools, to those who were reluctant Science students.
My experience has been in the classroom, but has also included one to one tuition.
Many school experiences involve sitting quietly, receiving knowledge, and regurgitating it in examinations. This does not make learning enjoyable it is geared toward teaching facts rather than skills. I believe learning is best done when students are actively involved and it is enquiry based.
In a rapidly changing world, students need to be lifelong learners and engaging them in enquiry-based learning will teach them how to ask questions and how to find answers to their questions. Students need to learn how to think and not what to think so that they can apply skills to any scenario. To this end, I let my students know that their perspectives and opinions are valued by offering space to share them. I try to incorporate students’ interests into my lessons and enable them to grapple with questions, rather than spoon-feeding them answers.

The first lesson went well and my daughter seems encouraged so far.
