Personal Description:

I have a PhD and master's degree in geography, and work as a university researcher. My academic background is in the social sciences (particularly the environmental social sciences), and English as a second language. I am friendly and personable. I have experience working with children from 6 years up to adult tuition.
I have travelled extensively and lived in Japan, Australia and New Zealand for over 11 years.

Tutoring Experience:

I have a long background (10 years +) of teaching (including university lecturing, small group tutorials, one on one lessons, and high school) in the UK and overseas. I have also taught community groups.
My fields of expertise are geography (GCSE/ A-level), human geography (degree), study skills, sociology and social sciences, and English as a second language.

I have undertaken courses on teaching skills and methods through various academic institutions, and have teaching evaluations available upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy working with students to find a suitable learning and teaching approach. I provide strong feedback and use real-world examples to explain complex theories and approaches. I spend time getting to know my students and to build a basis of mutual trust and understanding to reach (and exceed) the student's goals.
Before starting tutoring sessions, I will work with the student (and their parents, were appropriate) to devise a clear work plan, and to understand the expectations and aspirations of all involved. I provide feedback to all parties through the tutoring process, and regularly monitor progress.
