I enjoy the teaching process and am a friendly and relaxed, patient person. I enjoy helping students to improve their skills, understanding and confidence, and to achieve the grades they need.
I have over 20 years of teaching and tuition experience up to and including A level Maths, Further Maths and degree level Maths, and have an excellent track record of good or improved results. This includes classroom and private tuition. I have extensive experience of teaching A level Maths on different Examination boards - frequently with Edexcel or OCR but others such as AQA too.
I have also taught Oxford entrance examination, Edexcel Advanced Extension Award
and Cambridge Step entrance exam preparation.
I have increasingly supported students taking Maths modules on Maths or
'Maths related' University degrees. I understand the transition from school to University Maths. If you wish to ask me about this, please state your University, the year you are in, with module titles and brief content description.
I am also a Cass Business School Tutor (a City University Faculty), teaching on Financial Maths and Business Statistics modules. Cass Business School is currently ranked 1st in London in the Businesss/Management undergraduate degree category.
Maths is best learned by 'doing' so one of my aims will be to support and encourage students to do problems themselves - gradually, confidence is gained.
There are many different types of lessson I teach (depending on student requests or needs). For example:
1) Reinforcing a particular topic: I will thoroughly explain it and then show some examples.
2) Exam or topic practice: we will look at a variety of exam or textbook questions.
I will support, correct, explain, encourage or intervene if necessary. It's most important to make sure students are know each topic thoroughly, to be able to do questions on it. Each lesson is an opportunity to observe and learn how a student is progressing and refine and develop an approach that works for that particular student.
I always try to respond to the requests or needs of the student themselves. For example if they want to practise exam questions then we will do that. I will always have in mind an overall long term stategy that will consider how to enhance their future exam prospects.
In addition I understand the difficulties which students frequently face in Maths, and I aim to identify weaknesses, reinforce strengths as well as provide support and motivation. My experience enables me to more quickly assess the abilities and knowledge of each individual student. I try to provide a drive for students without them feeling pressured. I like students to develop the tools and confidence to approach problems by themselves, and to see links between different topics, and I also hope to inspire students to improve their skills and feel a sense of achievement as their abilities increase.
Success will of course depend on the application of the student - so I always encourage them to work by themselves between lessons. I may set or suggest questions if requested - or recommend they complete any relevant weekly homeworks.
I hope they will begin to enjoy the subject more too and see Maths as a useful skill that will enhance their Higher Education or Career prospects!
