Personal Description:

Hi I'm David, an experienced maths tutor offering a professional tutoring service to students from primary to university level.

I grew up in Suffolk, and went through the primary, middle, and high school system here. After completing my GCSEs and A-levels, I worked at a local pet food company for a few years, before moving to Nottingham University to train as a civil engineer. I graduated with a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering awarded with first class (Hons), before moving on to specialise in fluid mechanics at postgraduate level.

Tutoring Experience:

I began tutoring maths on a one-to-one basis during my first year in Nottingham. This came about after responding to an advert from Nottingham council, looking for helpers to join an outreach programme to assist students who were struggling at school. Being through the council authority, I held a full enhanced CRB check for this position. I have continued working with maths students for the seven years since then, in which time I have taught students from ages 8 to 34 years old, across all the main examining bodies (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, OCR-MEI and CIE).

More recently, since returning to Suffolk I have been working independently, and began advertising with FirstTutors in October 2014. Feedback from the students I have worked with during this time can be found below. Presently, I'm working with students from Debenham High School (AQA syllabus), Northgate High School (OCR syllabus), St. Albans Catholic High School (Edexcel syllabus), Stowmarket High School (AQA syllabus), Woodbridge School (OCR syllabus) and University Campus Suffolk. These include:
– KS2 & KS3 students, covering fundamental topics in preparation for GCSE.
– GCSE students, covering foundation and higher level material.
– A-level students, covering modules C1–C4, M1–M2, S1–S2, D1–D2, FP1–FP3.
– University students, covering Fourier Series, Laplace Transforms, ODEs, PDEs, Matrices, Complex Numbers, etc.

Tutoring Approach:

My aim will always be to build your confidence in maths. I personally used to dread being asked questions in school, and so my lessons are designed so that you never feel like that. The work that we do will utilise us practising questions together, and talking about anything that is difficult.

I consider myself to be very diligent, and across a suitable run of lessons I will ensure all topics are covered in depth. If our time together is more restricted, I will ascertain which areas need the most improvement, and methodically work through as much material as possible.

New material will be taught by example, and applied by working through textbook and exam questions together. I will provide sets of questions for every topic, which will be of ascending difficulty, and specific to your syllabus. As practise in-between lessons, I will always encourage students to repeat the questions we have covered together, to ensure the new content has been fully understood. The following lesson will always begin with an opportunity to address any difficulties that may have arisen in this individual practise.

I understand that if new knowledge isn't revised periodically it will be forgotten and this can often cause unnecessary stress on students coming into the exam period. With this in mind I plan my lessons so that alongside learning new content, time is regularly diverted to the revision of old topics.

I will always come to lessons well prepared, and with plenty of resources to pass on. When we reach the point of preparing for exams, I have hundreds of past exam questions for us to practise with. I take a very focused and precise approach to developing exam technique, and always look to have all content covered in advance of exams, so that the final lessons can be spent improving exam skills.
