Dear Parent and Student,
I'm a Chinese expert in my mid-30s and passionate about all things Chinese. After gaining a 2:1 in Chinese Studies from Leeds University, I spent six years in China as a teacher, translator, journalist and Chinese medicine student. I now specialise in Chinese medicine, literary translation, interpreting, as well as teaching Chinese to all ages, and Chinese philosophy to undergraduate students. After many years of immersing myself in Chinese language and culture, I am ideally placed to help others learn this challenging and fascinating language.
I taught many children English during my time in China, particularly in preparation for coming to school in the UK, and have taught Chinese and Philosophy at undergraduate level. I have personally experienced both very bad and exceptional Chinese teaching, so I know the best ways in which to study and teach in a way that makes learning fun and memorable.
With so much to learn and so few reference points for westerners learning Chinese, lengthy vocabulary lists soon become overwhelming. I find the best way learn Chinese is to practice vocabulary and grammar in the context of a sentence and then short story. This gives the mind a context in which to remember what has been practised, particularly if some humour is involved. I remember when learning myself that I soon forgot vocab lists, but to this day I still remember the funny stories I created with my teachers to help me remember vocab and grammar. Language learning is all about context, not stuffy lists.
