My name is David and I'm currently a postgraduate student at the University of Birmingham. I'm studying a master's degree in Translation Studies, specialising in the translation of German into English, having been lucky enough to be awarded a scholarship to do this.
I'm really passionate about the German language and all things German! Prior to undertaking my current degree, I studied Law with German (also at Birmingham), which included writing a 6000 word dissertation in the German language graduating with a 2.1. I gained the best results in my year in my final year translation module. This year I have achieved distinctions in all modules I have undertaken. I have spent the last year as a foreign language assistant, teaching English at two schools in Germany. I also spent a year living and studying German Law in Berlin.
My main teaching experience comes from my role as a foreign language assistant in Germany last academic year. In this role I prepared and undertook interactive language-learning with students, as well as teaching students in small groups and on a one-on-one basis, including exam preparation.
In addition to this, during my undergraduate degree I worked as a mentor for the educational charity: Debate Mate. In this role I helped to set up and run debating clubs in schools in Birmingham. This required me to teach debating and public speaking skills and provide constructive feedback to students.
Finally, whilst still at school I had a role as a mentor to younger students. This involved helping students who were struggling academically with languages to improve their grades.
My approach to tutoring is adapted to the needs of the individual tutee. I use the first session of tuition to discuss with the tutee any areas of particular difficulty, or areas where the tutee lacks confidence and to establish goals to be achieved. The tuition will then aim to give the tutee a thorough grounding in German grammar and vocabulary. This will focus on areas in which the tutee lacks confidence, providing homework to be undertaken in the tutee's free time, which will be discussed in detail at the beginning of each session. This will include past exam papers with regard to GCSE and A-level tuition.
