I am a freelance tutor and writer with experience in a variety of settings. I have written plays for the theatre and BBC Radio and am a published academic. I also spent some time in the Civil Service where I produced a range of documents including research reports, ministerial briefings and press releases. As Research Manager at Ofsted I commissioned and edited a series of research reports which had a major impact on educational policy. I have a wide interest in literature and the arts and a good understanding of style and technique.I have a B.A (Hons) degree in English and an M.A (Mark of Distinction) in English Literature. I also have a PTLLS teaching qualification.
I am an experienced tutor specialising in literature and the arts. I have taught to degree level at Humberside College of Higher Education and also spent many years teaching extramural classes at Birkbeck College, London. Having relocated to Suffolk, I now run adult education courses and workshops for a range of learning centres, including Ipswich Institute, Aldeburgh Library Foundation and Coastal leisure Learning. I also run courses for the Workers Educational Association and in a recent WEA Observation Report my teaching was assessed as Outstanding.
My teaching style is relaxed and informal but thoroughly researched. My aim is to coach students to develop their own skills and understanding and at the same time help them to structure their learning. I can offer useful advice on essay-writing, exam preparation and revision, together with lots of background information in an accessible form.
