I have just finished my integrated chemistry masters degree at the University of Bristol for which I have been awarded a first class with honours. I have specialised in organic chemistry whilst nurturing my strong interest in pure and applied mathematics. I am due to start my PhD in chemical synthesis in September at the Bristol Synthetic Chemistry CDT. I am currently involved in a summer project investigating possible mechanisms for the outbreak of skin cancer using spectroscopic methods. Having immersed myself in the chemical sciences with great enthusiasm for the past four years of my degree, and I believe I have a solid foundation for tutoring the sciences and maths.
I have been a private tutor for one year now and have improved the grades of three tutees from B/C to A/A* standard for A-Level. For part of my final year project I worked for a high performance research group that necessitated my presentation to be articulate, concise, and easy to understand.
I believe that fundamental understanding of concepts can allow students to extrapolate and infer more complex concepts with sufficient guidance. Outside lessons, I will write out problems for the tutee to work on in between or during lessons. My plan for these is to test many instances of the concepts I will teach to instil confidence in the tutee, and to later see if they can extrapolate information from the concept and speculate upon more difficult problems, which will help them think outside the box. I also plan for these problems to be slightly harder than is expected in exams so that the tutee is more than confident about tackling the problems that will be presented in the real thing. I also strongly advocate the use of acronyms and abbreviations that can be used to recall vast amounts of trivial facts that inevitably come up in exams as they have served me incredibly well over the years.
