Personal Description:

I have 3 children and have been happily married for 30 years. I play and and used to coach tennis at the local club and one of my sons is a professional tennis player currently on tour. My eldest son is an actor, and my youngest is still at school. I returned to education as a mature student and gained first an M.A (Hons) Psychology and then a Ph.D (Doctorate) in Psychology and Applied Computing from Dundee University where my own research involved looking at the potential of jokes and riddles to help children with communication problems and challenges, take a more active and social role in their day to day lives. I am a registered Chartered Psychologist and a member of the British Psychological Association and a professional member of The British Association of Sport and Exercise Scientists. In my spare time I like to cycle and take walks with my dog.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught undergraduate and post graduate Psychology and Research Methods/Design at university undergraduate and post graduate level. I enjoy teaching all aspects of this fascinating subject. I completed my PhD in 2004 at Dundee University whilst working on my research on communication and teaching on courses including Research Methodology, Computing, Ergonomics and on the Access to Education courses. I have published over 30 academic papers and two book chapters in my field, and have won awards for my novel research. I also thought it would be beneficial to my own professional development to add to my university, mainly theoretical work by workng with children with both ordinary and extraordinary needs in a primary setting. To fulfill this role I have recently worked for the Local Educational Authority in the difficult field of additional support, including both within a special unit and also as part of the ASN team working with children with individual education plans and children diagnosed with ASD. I now feel I have a fuller understanding of both theoretical and practical learning methods for children of all abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

As someone with a Phd that includes helping kids learn how to tell jokes (I was known as the "joke doctor!") I would hope that its fairly clear that my approach to tutoring is that learning should be fun as well as challenging. I like to be creative in my ideas so that the student really embraces learning and understands the process. I also enjoy teaching study skills and coping strategies to pass exams at the highest level. I have also had the opportunity to improve my own skills, and further my own development by working in a primary school setting, with children with individual needs, challenging behaviour and children with ASD, which has been a challenge I have enjoyed
