Personal Description:

My qualifications and experience:
I completed my bachelor's degree in Law in 2013 and subsequently a master's degree in International Business and Commercial Law. I currently work within the Risk and Compliance department of an international law firm in central Manchester which involves analysing commercial conflict issues, money laundering and sanctions problems.

A little about me:
I was born and raised in Finland and moved to Bolton some 12 years ago. I speak fluent Finnish, English and Somali with a basic understanding of Estonian. I feel my multicultural and multilingual background has given me the opportunity to tailor my communication approach effectively. Accordingly, my approach will vary from tutee to tutee and level to level.

Why I started tutoring:
I have always loved sharing my knowledge and experience. I strongly believe that an individual’s success and failure in school, college or university is far more complicated that simply "I am intelligent" or "I am smart." I find this limits students ability to progress. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to empower individuals through improving their confidence and showing them how to revise or structure essays. I see tutoring as a chance to start my own little school. Seeing others succeed, especially when I have had the opportunity to help, has always been something special to me.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored and still tutor individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and levels. My tutees range from GCSE students to those undertaking their master's degree. During my time as a tutor, I have assisted tutees with exam revision throughout the year by helping them lay out effective revision timetables before exams and assist with revision. On the other end of the spectrum, my tuition includes essay proof reading. When assessing essays, my key aim is to ensure that the tutee has critically analysed and applied all necessary elements of the question/topic.

I have seen significant progress in all of my tutees. The majority of my tutees have gone on to reach a 1st class in essays. This is often due to discussions at planning stage, research assistance and constructive feedback when proof reading.

I have recently helped an A-level student who was on target for an E after starting the course very late. Following two months of tutoring, the tutee received a B. Whilst not an excellent mark, this was a success considering his circumstances.

Tutoring Approach:

I am an approachable person and hope to create a comfortable working relationship with tutees and offer more than academic education alone. Through contribution I hope to increase the tutees confidence encourage the use of creativity.

The key to academic success lies in holding a genuine interest in what you study. One of the key objectives of my tutoring approach is to develop and embed such an interest in the tutees. While some tutees feel the expression of their knowledge on paper needs improvement, others may wish to improve their understanding of the topic. I aim to tutor by ensuring that the key exam techniques are practiced extensively using the relevant topic knowledge and everyday examples/analogies.

My approach is determined by the tutees needs which vary substantially. As stated above, I provide tuition that focuses on understanding specific topics, improving the tutees exam technique and problem solving techniques (these three are usually applied in each tuition class together). I also proof read and provide feedback on essays/courseworks. As part of this, I provide an insight into different arguments that the tutee may wish to consider and how to develop such arguments.

Upon completion of a set topic, I look to set and leave each tutee with practice questions which the tutee will perform under exam conditions in their own time. This is to ensure that the sessions are spent learning the topics themselves and exam techniques as opposed to examination. I will then assess the tutee's answers and hopefully provide useful tips to improve in the future.

I am also open to different approaches suggested by the tutees.
