Home Tuition for Maths in Bristol

I have recently graduated with a PhD in Mathematical Physics from The University of Bristol. I have since held a position as Research Associate within the School of Mathematics at The University of Bristol, as well as currently teaching as an Assistant Lecturer.

I enjoy playing the guitar and violin, reading, painting and travelling. I have several active hobbies including climbing/bouldering, trampolining and cycling which I fit in to my week whenever I can.

I like to think of myself as an approachable, friendly person with a genuine passion for academia and learning, in which I thoroughly enjoy having discussions, learning and teaching many areas of science.

Tutoring Experience

I have experience teaching and tutoring a wide range of ages and experiences, from pre-GCSE through to degree level mathematics and physics.

I first began tutoring in a more professional capacity in 2016, where I maintained tuition for up to 8 students per week over the course of 2/3 years, before needing to focus on my doctoral studies.

Tutoring Approach

In many areas of learning, a given concept or idea can remain elusive to a student for a long time, which can diminish motivation and/or appreciation for the subject. A technique I employ is to approach a problem from more than one viewpoint, increasing an individual's chances of understanding a problem, whilst simultaneously getting them used to testing ideas and building intuition.

Once a problem is understood, and a bigger picture can be established, the student is then more capable of articulating ideas, where they can develop confidence in their subject.

I find it important to establish the needs/academic goals and effective areas of learning of any tutee I work with; establishing how much a student will improve based on discussions, example questions and individual research.

Tutoring can be an illuminating and enjoyable experience, coupled with a real sense of achievement and pleasing results. I firmly believe that building a team dynamic between tutor and student is the foundation for an excellent tutoring experience.
