Personal Description:

I've recently graduated from New College, Oxford, reading music. I'm now studying for my masters in performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, specialising in the cello. My career aim is to become a successful performing musician, but I also really enjoy teaching, both instrumental and academic. Before Oxford I studied at Trinity School and also at the Royal College of Music, Junior Department.

I'm a keen sportsman, having played football and hockey at university and I understand the careful balance that has to be struck between the extracurricular activities that children take part in these days.

I work at Newtons Music Shop in Merstham as both a shop assistant and teacher and I am beginning to work in the workshop as an instrument maker and fixer.

Tutoring Experience:

Whilst at University I taught for two years at the college-affiliated school, working as both an academic and instrumental teacher for their Saturday music school. This was a valuable experience working with keen young musicians but they were all of a varied ability and so a wide approach was needed to keep all of them progressing.

Since I have returned to Croydon, I have been tutoring three students for Maths GCSE and teaching the cello to several pupils.

Tutoring Approach:

The best approach to one-to-one tutoring is to create a positive atmosphere for the student in which they don't feel pressured or insecure if they don't know something, but are comfortable in asking questions and asking for more help when it is needed. Compared to classroom teaching, having the security and confidence to ask questions, be wrong and develop is greatly enhanced in one-to-one sessions.
I believe that as a young adult, younger people feel less pressurised and more comfortable creating the rapport that makes one-to-one tuition more effective than classroom teaching. I also consider myself to be a very positive person and would never want to focus on negatives or shortcomings, but ensure that my pupils feel positive about the work they're doing and the progress they're making.
